Palace of The Grand Dukes of Lithuania

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania (Lithuanian: Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės valdovų rūmai Vilniaus žemutinėje pilyje) is a palace in Vilnius, Lithuania, built originally in the 15th century for the rulers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Royal Palace in the Lower Castle evolved over the years and prospered during the 16th and mid-17th centuries. For four centuries the palace was the political, administrative and cultural center of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was demolished in 1801. A new palace has been under construction since 2002 on the site of the original building, and it was opened on 6 July 2009.

Famous quotes containing the words palace and/or grand:

    It takes a heap o’ children to make a home that’s true,
    And home can be a palace grand, or just a plain, old shoe;
    But if it has a mother dear, and a good old dad or two,
    Why, that’s the sort of good old home for good old me and you.
    Louis Untermeyer (1885–1977)

    This we take it is the grand characteristic of our age. By our skill in Mechanism, it has come to pass, that in the management of external things we excel all other ages; while in whatever respects the pure moral nature, in true dignity of soul and character, we are perhaps inferior to most civilised ages.
    Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881)
