Background
Recording three LPs worth of material with a new line-up, Lee gave one to Elektra Records in order to fulfill the contract that had been in place for nearly four years. Four Sail was released in August 1969.
Arranging the two remaining LPs into a double album, Lee signed a new contract with Blue Thumb Records and oversaw the release of the seventeen-track Out Here in December 1969, a few months after Elektra released Four Sail.
The Out Here title came from the name of the cover painting, created by Burt Shonberg in 1969.
In May 2007, the album was released as the first disc of The Blue Thumb Recordings by Universal's Hip-O Select division. Its only appearance on compact disc before this was a 1990 reissue distributed through MCA. (The British label Ace put together an official compilation called Out There, featuring most of the songs from Out Here but filled the rest of the disc with songs not associated with the album.)

Famous quotes containing the word background:
“They were more than hostile. In the first place, I was a south Georgian and I was looked upon as a fiscal conservative, and the Atlanta newspapers quite erroneously, because they didnt know anything about me or my background here in Plains, decided that I was also a racial conservative.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
“Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment; that background which the painter may not daub, be he master or bungler, and which, however awkward a figure we may have made in the foreground, remains ever our inviolable asylum, where no indignity can assail, no personality can disturb us.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“In the true sense ones native land, with its background of tradition, early impressions, reminiscences and other things dear to one, is not enough to make sensitive human beings feel at home.”
—Emma Goldman (18691940)
