Academics

The school ethnicity make-up in 2007 was 46% White/non-Hispanic, 1% Black/non-Hispanic, 49% Hispanic, 3% Asian/Pacific Islander, 1% American Indian/Alaska Native. The Department of Education designated the school "satisfactory" after previously rating it as "unsafe" in 2006. The "unsafe" rating was due to the number of suspensions and expulsions for violence and weapon possession. The improvement was attributed to increased discussion and education involving teachers, administrators and students.

In 2008, 63% of the school's seniors received their high school diploma. Of 208 students, 132 graduated, 68 dropped out, and 8 are still in high school.

Famous quotes containing the word academics:

Our first line of defense in raising children with values is modeling good behavior ourselves. This is critical. How will our kids learn tolerance for others if our hearts are filled with hate? Learn compassion if we are indifferent? Perceive academics as important if soccer practice is a higher priority than homework?
    Fred G. Gosman (20th century)

Almost all scholarly research carries practical and political implications. Better that we should spell these out ourselves than leave that task to people with a vested interest in stressing only some of the implications and falsifying others. The idea that academics should remain “above the fray” only gives ideologues license to misuse our work.
    Stephanie Coontz (b. 1944)
