Olympus M:robe - Current Situation

Current Situation

On November 9, 2005, Olympus announced that they were stopping production of the m:robes. Many users say that it was due to the lack of marketing — the only marketing in the United States was two Super Bowl ads. Many users also predicted this stop, due to the drop in price of the m:robes shortly before the action was taken, and the fact that the MR-100 was being sold at Radio Shack for $100 USD after rebates. There are only a few accessories for the m:robes.

The m:robe line of players are no longer available for purchase from the Olympus website and Olympus has frozen the development of the next generation of m:robe products to put more resources into its digital camera and audio recording research, development, marketing and sales.

M:robe music players can still be purchased on eBay and other used electronics outlets.

Firmware and software updates are available at http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_downloads.asp?id=91.

There is a flaw in version 1.06 of m:trip, a fix can be found at http://www.mrobe.org/content/view/21/4/.

There is an active community for the m:robes at http://www.mrobe.org/. For questions regarding these players, feel free to register on the forums and ask there.

A port of the Rockbox open source firmware is currently available for the m:robe 100, and a work-in-progress port for the m:robe500i is underway. A version of Linux has also been made for the m:robe.

Famous quotes containing the words current and/or situation:

    Through this broad street, restless ever,
    Ebbs and flows a human tide,
    Wave on wave a living river;
    Wealth and fashion side by side;
    Toiler, idler, slave and master, in the same quick current glide.
    John Greenleaf Whittier (1807–1892)

    Raising a daughter is an extremely political act in this culture. Mothers have been placed in a no-win situation with their daughters: if they teach their daughters simply how to get along in a world that has been shaped by men and male desires, then they betray their daughters’ potential But, if they do not, they leave their daughters adrift in a hostile world without survival strategies.
    Elizabeth Debold (20th century)
