Oliver (chimpanzee) - Oliver's Last Years & His Death in 2012

Oliver's Last Years & His Death in 2012

Oliver spent his last years with another Chimp, the gentle female known as Raisin. She was placed with Oliver for companionship since Oliver's advanced age and years as a test subject left him blind, arthritic and unable to interact daily with younger, more playful Chimps at the Sanctuary. He took part in regular enrichment activities including a watermelon smashing party documented on the Friends of Animals online Newsletter and even the chance to paint. Although elderly, Oliver had access to the outdoors and lived the rest of his life in quiet retirement. News of Oliver as well as photos were often posted online by his caregivers, owing to public interest. Oliver died peacefully in his sleep and was found on 2 June 2012 in his favorite sleeping hammock with his loving female chimp companion, Raisin, at his side. Stephen Rene Tello, executive director of Primarily Primates, states that Oliver will be cremated and his ashes spread on the grounds of the Sanctuary.

Famous quotes containing the words oliver, years and/or death:

the hatchlings wake in the swaying branches,
    in the silver baskets,
    and love the world.
Is it necessary to say any more?
Have you heard them singing in the wind, above the final fields?
Have you ever been so happy in your life?
    —Mary Oliver (b. 1935)

The world is a puzzling place today. All these banks sending us credit cards, with our names on them. Well, we didn’t order any credit cards! We don’t spend what we don’t have. So we just cut them in half and throw them out, just as soon as we open them in the mail. Imagine a bank sending credit cards to two ladies over a hundred years old! What are those folks thinking?
    Sarah Louise Delany (b. 1889)

You’re very beautiful. So beautiful I’m going to make you immortal. Like Kharis, you will live forever. What I can do for you I can also do for myself. Neither time nor death can touch us. You and I together for eternity here in the temple of Karnak. You shall be my high priestess.
    Griffin Jay, Maxwell Shane (1905–1983)
