North Karelia Brigade

North Karelia Brigade (Finnish Pohjois-Karjalan prikaati) is a Finnish Army unit situated in Kontioranta, Kontiolahti, about 19 kilometres North from the city of Joensuu. Annually 1500 recruits start their military service in Kontioranta. The brigade is the infantry centre of Eastern Finland: it trains soldiers to work in the roadless circumstanses in North Karelia, Southern Savonia and Northern Savonia. The majority of conscripts are from that area. There are about 300 career personnel. The commander of the Brigade is Colonel Jari Kytölä.

Famous quotes containing the words north and/or brigade:

So-called Western Civilization, as practised in half of Europe, some of Asia and a few parts of North America, is better than anything else available. Western civilization not only provides a bit of life, a pinch of liberty and the occasional pursuance of happiness, it’s also the only thing that’s ever tried to. Our civilization is the first in history to show even the slightest concern for average, undistinguished, none-too-commendable people like us.
    —P.J. (Patrick Jake)

[John] Brough’s majority is “glorious to behold.” It is worth a big victory in the field. It is decisive as to the disposition of the people to prosecute the war to the end. My regiment and brigade were both unanimous for Brough [the Union party candidate for governor of Ohio].
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
