The North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island focuses on the maritime history and culture of northeastern North Carolina, including Roanoke Island. The museum is located in the George Washington Creef Boathouse on the Manteo waterfront. Exhibits include boats typically used in the Outer Banks by fishermen and sailors. Classes are offered in sailing, boat handling and boat safety in community boating programs. The Creef Boathouse also offers boat building workshops.

Visitors can also enter the Roanoke Marshes lighthouse, a replica of the original 1877 Roanoke Marshes Light once located in Croatan Sound that contains exhibits about the original lighthouse and local maritime history.

Famous quotes containing the words north, carolina, museum and/or island:

I meet him at every turn. He is more alive than ever he was. He has earned immortality. He is not confined to North Elba nor to Kansas. He is no longer working in secret. He works in public, and in the clearest light that shines on this land.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

Poetry presents indivisible wholes of human consciousness, modified and ordered by the stringent requirements of form. Prose, aiming at a definite and concrete goal, generally suppresses everything inessential to its purpose; poetry, existing only to exhibit itself as an aesthetic object, aims only at completeness and perfection of form.
Richard Harter Fogle, U.S. critic, educator. The Imagery of Keats and Shelley, ch. 1, University of North Carolina Press (1949)

I never can pass by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York without thinking of it not as a gallery of living portraits but as a cemetery of tax-deductible wealth.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)

I suggested to them also the great desirability of a general knowledge on the Island of the English language. They are under an English speaking government and are a part of the territory of an English speaking nation.... While I appreciated the desirability of maintaining their grasp on the Spanish language, the beauty of that language and the richness of its literature, that as a practical matter for them it was quite necessary to have a good comprehension of English.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)
