North Carolina Highway 561 - History

History

NC 561 was formed in 1925 and initially ran northeast from NC 56 in downtown Louisburg (East Nash & Main Streets) to NC 58 in Centerville. It was extended in 1928 to US 17-1 and NC 40 in Halifax, now highways US 301, NC 903 and NC 125. The highway was extended further in 1931 to US 258 and NC 12 near Spring Hill (now just US 258). Between 1954 and 1963, NC 561 was extended once again along US 258 to Rich Square and then eastward out through Ahoskie to its current eastern terminus at NC 45 in Harrellsville. During this time, its western terminus was moved over to the new Louisburg Bypass (US 401 and NC 39).

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The history of men’s opposition to women’s emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself.
    Virginia Woolf (1882–1941)

Those who weep for the happy periods which they encounter in history acknowledge what they want; not the alleviation but the silencing of misery.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)

No one can understand Paris and its history who does not understand that its fierceness is the balance and justification of its frivolity. It is called a city of pleasure; but it may also very specially be called a city of pain. The crown of roses is also a crown of thorns. Its people are too prone to hurt others, but quite ready also to hurt themselves. They are martyrs for religion, they are martyrs for irreligion; they are even martyrs for immorality.
    Gilbert Keith Chesterton (1874–1936)
