NHS Hospital Trust

An NHS hospital trust, also known as an acute trust is an NHS trust that provides secondary health services within the English National Health Service and in NHS Wales. Hospital trusts are commissioned to provide these services by NHS primary care trusts.

Trusts judged to be performing with outstanding efficiency may apply to Monitor to become NHS foundation trusts. These trusts are given greater independence from NHS strategic health authorities.

According to the NHS website, as of December 2009 there are 168 acute NHS trusts in England.

Famous quotes containing the words hospital and/or trust:

For millions of men and women, the church has been the hospital for the soul, the school for the mind and the safe depository for moral ideas.
    Gerald R. Ford (b. 1913)

Every journalist who is not too stupid or too full of himself to notice what is going on knows that what he does is morally indefensible. He is a kind of confidence man, preying on people’s vanity, ignorance, or loneliness, gaining their trust and betraying them without remorse.
    Janet Malcolm (b. 1934)
