History

One of the leading post-war professional tournaments, the event was sponsored by the Sunday newspaper News of the World and carried a £1,500 prize money. The event was first held at the Leicester Square Hall in London, where it remained until its disestablishment. The event was played on a round-robin basis. All tournaments used a handicap system, as Joe Davis deemed superior and his opponents were given 20 points per frame. The 1959 event was played under the snooker plus format, which was introduced to the public by Joe Davis on 26 October at the Burroughes Hall, London.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is no history of how bad became better.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The only history is a mere question of one’s struggle inside oneself. But that is the joy of it. One need neither discover Americas nor conquer nations, and yet one has as great a work as Columbus or Alexander, to do.
    —D.H. (David Herbert)

Racism is an ism to which everyone in the world today is exposed; for or against, we must take sides. And the history of the future will differ according to the decision which we make.
    Ruth Benedict (1887–1948)
