“New York has never learnt the art of growing old by playing on all its pasts. Its present invents itself, from hour to hour, in the act of throwing away its previous accomplishments and challenging the future. A city composed of paroxysmal places in monumental reliefs.”
—Michel de Certeau (19251986)
“A suburb is an attempt to get out of reach of the city without having the city be out of reach.”
—Mason Cooley (b. 1927)
“Anyone who has a child today should train him to be either a physicist or a ballet dancer. Then hell escape.”
—W.H. (Wystan Hugh)
“Every time an ashtray is missing from a hotel, they dont come looking for you. But let a diamond bracelet disappear in France and they shout John Robie, the Cat. You dont have to spend every day of your life proving your honesty, but I do.”
—John Michael Hayes (b.1919)
“Although I mean it, and project the meaning
As hard as I can into its brushed-metal surface,
It cannot, in this deteriorating climate, pick up
Where I leave off.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
