New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District

New Hampshire's 1st congressional district covers the southeastern part of New Hampshire. The district consists of three general areas: Greater Manchester, the Seacoast and the Lakes Region.

It is represented in the United States House of Representatives by Democrat Carol Shea-Porter.

Politically, the 1st district may be the most competitive congressional district in the country. It has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of EVEN, indicating that it generally votes in line with the country as a whole. Of the nine districts nationwide with a CPVI of EVEN, this is the only district that has ousted three incumbents in the past ten years, and is also the only district of the nine where no candidate has won more than 54% of the vote since 2004.

Famous quotes containing the words hampshire and/or district:

A sturdy lad from New Hampshire or Vermont who in turn tries all the professions, who teams it, farms it, peddles, keeps a school, preaches, edits a newspaper, goes to Congress, buys a township, and so forth, in successive years, and always like a cat falls on his feet, is worth a hundred of these city dolls. He walks abreast with his days and feels no shame in not “studying a profession,” for he does not postpone his life, but lives already.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Most works of art, like most wines, ought to be consumed in the district of their fabrication.
    Rebecca West (1892–1983)
