New Community Jewish High School

New Community Jewish High School (informally known as "New Jew") is a Jewish high school in West Hills, California. It offers a college preparatory program for students in grades 9-12; 145 academic courses including 58 electives; 5 world languages; 14 Advanced Placement courses in Math, Science, English, History, and Languages; 22 competitive athletic teams; a global Jewish education program featuring exchange programs with high schools in Tel Aviv; experiential education programs featuring overnight grade level trips and an All School 3-night “Shabbaton”; social action and interest clubs including robotics, Israel advocacy, cancer awarenss, Save Darfur, Invisible Children, music appreciation, Film, Debate, American Politics, and many more; musical theatre and drama productions; Science Academy; a comprehensive college guidance program; and school and community leadership opportunities.

The school was founded in 2002 with 40 students, and was located at the West Hills campus of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles. It outgrew the available space within two years, and relocated its campus to share space at Shomrei Torah Synagogue, a conservative synagogue. In January 2011, it was reported that the school (now with 400 students) would purchase the West Hills Federation campus where it had begun, with a planned return to that location by 2012 or 2013.

Famous quotes containing the words community, jewish, high and/or school:

Jesus would recommend you to pass the first day of the week rather otherwise than you pass it now, and to seek some other mode of bettering the morals of the community than by constraining each other to look grave on a Sunday, and to consider yourselves more virtuous in proportion to the idleness in which you pass one day in seven.
    Frances Wright (1795–1852)

I do not believe in the creed professed by the Jewish Church, by the Roman Church, by the Greek Church, by the Turkish Church, by the Protestant Church, nor by any church that I know of. My own mind is my own church.
    Thomas Paine (1737–1809)

Life! Life! Don’t let us go to life for our fulfilment or our experience. It is a thing narrowed by circumstances, incoherent in its utterance, and without that fine correspondence of form and spirit which is the only thing that can satisfy the artistic and critical temperament. It makes us pay too high a price for its wares, and we purchase the meanest of its secrets at a cost that is monstrous and infinite.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

The first rule of education for me was discipline. Discipline is the keynote to learning. Discipline has been the great factor in my life. I discipline myself to do everything—getting up in the morning, walking, dancing, exercise. If you won’t have discipline, you won’t have a nation. We can’t have permissiveness. When someone comes in and says, “Oh, your room is so quiet,” I know I’ve been successful.
Rose Hoffman, U.S. public school third-grade teacher. As quoted in Working, book 8, by Studs Terkel (1973)
