National Health and Medical Research Council

The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) is Australia's peak funding body for medical research, with a budget of roughly 700 million dollars a year. The Council was established to develop and maintain health standards and is responsible for implementing the National Health and Medical Research Council Act 1992.

This body is a material agency and is incorporated under the Financial Management and Accountability Act 1997. It was a part of the Department of Health and Ageing portfolio until mid-2007. It is now a self-governing statutory authority.

In 2010 the NHMRC's new online system for grant applications was the subject of criticism after a series of technical problems.

Famous quotes containing the words national, health, medical, research and/or council:

I submit all my plays to the National Theatre for rejection. To assure myself I am seeing clearly.
    Howard Barker (b. 1946)

In our great concern about the mental health of children, however, we have overlooked the mental health of mothers. They have been led to believe that their children’s needs must not be frustrated, and therefore all of their own normal angers, the normal ambivalences of living, are not permissible. The mother who has “bad” feelings toward her child is a bad mother.
    Elaine Heffner (20th century)

If science ever gets to the bottom of Voodoo in Haiti and Africa, it will be found that some important medical secrets, still unknown to medical science, give it its power, rather than the gestures of ceremony.
    Zora Neale Hurston (1891–1960)

Men talk, but rarely about anything personal. Recent research on friendship ... has shown that male relationships are based on shared activities: men tend to do things together rather than simply be together.... Female friendships, particularly close friendships, are usually based on self-disclosure, or on talking about intimate aspects of their lives.
    Bettina Arndt (20th century)

There by some wrinkled stones round a leafless tree
With beards askew, their eyes dull and wild
Twelve ragged men, the council of charity
Wandering the face of the earth a fatherless child....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
