National Harbours Board

The National Harbours Board was the administrative body that controlled the business and service operations in major Canadian ports in the years 1936 to 1983 and was also responsible for coordination and determination of policy, and planning and engineering of capital works. It reported on its activities to Parliament, through the Minister of Transport. The three member board was established by the National Harbours Board Act (1936) as a crown corporation. It was dissolved by the Canada Ports Corporation Act (1983) and replaced by the Canada Ports Corporation (Ports Canada) which devolved much of the National Harbour Board's former functions to local port authorities maintaining responsibility for ensuring that overall national transportation objectives are met as well as overseeing the Ports Canada Police until that service was disbanded in 1997.

Famous quotes containing the words national and/or board:

It is not unkind to say, from the standpoint of scenery alone, that if many, and indeed most, of our American national parks were to be set down on the continent of Europe thousands of Americans would journey all the way across the ocean in order to see their beauties.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)

As a man-of-war that sails through the sea, so this earth that sails through the air. We mortals are all on board a fast-sailing, never-sinking world-frigate, of which God was the shipwright; and she is but one craft in a Milky-Way fleet, of which God is the Lord High Admiral.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)
