National Day of Healing

National Day Of Healing

National Sorry Day is an annual event that has been held in Australiaon May 26, since 1998, to remember and commemorate the mistreatment of the continent's indigenous population. The Australian government's most controversial policies resulted in an entire "Stolen Generation"—i.e., "Aboriginal children separated, often forcibly, from their families of origin in the interest of turning them into white Australians". May 26 carries great significance for the Stolen Generations, as well as for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and non-indigenous Australians. On May 26, 1997, the "Bringing Them Home" report was tabled in Parliament.

The annual National Sorry Day commemorations remind and raise awareness among politicians, policy makers, and the wider public about the significance of the forcible removal policies and their impact on the children that were taken, but also on their families and communities.

Famous quotes containing the words national, day and/or healing:

Any honest examination of the national life proves how far we are from the standard of human freedom with which we began. The recovery of this standard demands of everyone who loves this country a hard look at himself, for the greatest achievments must begin somewhere, and they always begin with the person. If we are not capable of this examination, we may yet become one of the most distinguished and monumental failures in the history of nations.
    James Baldwin (1924–1987)

Let us have wine and women, mirth and laughter,
Sermons and soda-water the day after.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)

War has always been the great wisdom of all those spirits who have grown too inward, too deep; its healing power lies even in the wound.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
