Famous quotes containing the words national, college, natural and/or medicine:

The American, if he has a spark of national feeling, will be humiliated by the very prospect of a foreigner’s visit to Congress—these, for the most part, illiterate hacks whose fancy vests are spotted with gravy, and whose speeches, hypocritical, unctuous, and slovenly, are spotted also with the gravy of political patronage, these persons are a reflection on the democratic process rather than of it; they expose it in its process rather than of it; they expose it in its underwear.
    Mary McCarthy (1912–1989)

The only trouble here is they won’t let us study enough. They are so afraid we shall break down and you know the reputation of the College is at stake, for the question is, can girls get a college degree without ruining their health?
    Ellen Henrietta Swallow Richards (1842–1911)

Old age cannot be cured. An epoch or a civilization cannot be prevented from breathing its last. A natural process that happens to all flesh and all human manifestations cannot be arrested. You can only wring your hands and utter a beautiful swan song.
    Renee Winegarten (b. 1922)

The only medicine for suffering, crime, and all the other woes of mankind, is wisdom.
    Thomas Henry Huxley (1825–95)
