Early Life

McElhone was born in Hampstead to Irish parents, who were both journalists. She took her mother Noreen's maiden name as her stage name. McElhone has a scriptwriter brother Damon who lives in Los Angeles, and two half-brothers, Alexander and Nicholas, who live in Stockholm. Her parents separated when she was two and her Irish mother moved the family to Brighton and later married journalist and columnist Roy Greenslade.

McElhone, who took lessons in Irish dancing from ages 6–12, was educated at St. Mary's Hall School for Girls, an independent boarding school in Brighton, East Sussex. She graduated from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 1993.

Famous quotes containing the words early life, early and/or life:

... business training in early life should not be regarded solely as insurance against destitution in the case of an emergency. For from business experience women can gain, too, knowledge of the world and of human beings, which should be of immeasurable value to their marriage careers. Self-discipline, co-operation, adaptability, efficiency, economic management,—if she learns these in her business life she is liable for many less heartbreaks and disappointments in her married life.
    Hortense Odlum (1892–?)

Early to bed, early to rise, work like hell and organize.
    Albert Gore, Jr. (b. 1948)

Death is the end of life; ah, why
    Should life all labor be?
    Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892)
