Background
Mumbai faces a major problem of traffic, transportation, commuting due to inadequate infrastructure and other facilities. Chaotic traffic conditions has slowed vehicular traffic on most of the roads. Many attempts have been made in the past to overcome the problem of road congestion but without much success. Finally a comprehensive project was thought of which will not only ease out the existing situation but also will act as guiding principle to control the ever increasing traffic menace for years to come. Thus came into existence Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP), a project that seeks to enable smoother transportation in Mumbai. It was setup as a continuation of the Bombay Urban Transport Project (BUTP) which was completed in 1984 at a cost of 390 million (US$7.1 million).
Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Ltd. (MRVC) a joint venture of Ministry of Railways and Govt. of Maharashtra, for implementation of rail related projects under MUTP was formed in July 1999.
