Muir Glacier - Retreat

Retreat

Muir Glacier has undergone very rapid, well-documented retreat since its Little Ice Age maximum position at the mouth of Glacier Bay around 1780. Between 1941 and 2004 the glacier retreated more than twelve kilometers (seven miles) and thinned by over 800 meters (2625 feet). Ocean water has filled the valley replacing the ice.

Famous quotes containing the word retreat:

Knowledge is a comfortable and necessary retreat and shelter for us in an advanced age; and if we do not plant it while young, it will give us no shade when we are old.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

For the salvation of his soul the Muslim digs a well. It would be a fine thing if each of us were to leave behind a school, or a well, or something of the sort, so that life would not pass by and retreat into eternity without a trace.
    Anton Pavlovich Chekhov (1860–1904)

I am in earnest—I will not equivocate—I will not excuse—I will not retreat a single inch—and I will be heard!
    William Lloyd Garrison (1805–1879)
