Monarchy of Grenada - 1983 Invasion of Grenada

1983 Invasion of Grenada

Sir Paul Scoon was Governor General of Grenada from 1978 until 1992, a period which included the 1979 Grenadian Revolution and the subsequent People's Revolutionary Government led by Maurice Bishop's New Jewel Movement from 1979 to 1983 which culminated in the 1983 American led invasion of Grenada. Operation Urgent Fury was launched by US forces in 1983 and deposed the radical elements of the New Jewel Movement which had detained and then killed Prime Minister Bishop and assumed control of the government under the leadership of Bernard Coard. Prior to the invasion Scoon communicated with the leaders of several other Caribbean nations, who had been encouraging the US to invade Grenada and depose Coard. Endorsing the move, Scoon also communicated with the British and American governments, though he was later criticized for having insufficient communication with the Margaret Thatcher administration in London, and Queen Elizabeth II, Grenada's head of state.

Famous quotes containing the word invasion:

We should have an army so organized and so officered as to be capable in time of emergency, in cooperation with the National Militia, and under the provision of a proper national volunteer law, rapidly to expand into a force sufficient to resist all probable invasion from abroad and to furnish a respectable expeditionary force if necessary in the maintenance of our traditional American policy which bears the name of President Monroe.
    William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
