Mohammad Shafi Qureshi

Mohammad Shaffi Qureshi (Kashmiri: मुहम्मद शाफ़ी क़ुरैशी, محمد شافی قریشی ) is a prominent Muslim politician from India and the founder of the Congress party in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Born on the 24 November 1929. His father Contractor Late Haji Mohammad Amin Abbasi was the first transporter of Union Council Birote, near Kohala Bridge District Abbottabad, Pakistan before 1947. He has served in various capacities in his long and very active political career. He was the Union Deputy Minister of Commerce from 28-1-66 to 14-2-1969, Union Deputy Minister for Steel & Heavy Engineering from 15-2-69 to 2-5-1971, Union Deputy Minister for Railways from 10-10-1974 to March 1977, Minister of Tourism & Civil Aviation (31-7-79). He was sworn in as Governor of Bihar on 19-3-91 and remained up to 13-8-93, sworn in as Governor of Madhya Pradesh on 24.6.93, sworn in as Governor of Uttar Pradesh on May 3, 1996 to July 19, 1996.

He was till recently the Chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities from September 3, 2007 with the rank of Cabinet Minister till Wajahat Habibullah took over.
