Minister of Finance (India)

Minister Of Finance (India)

The Minister of Finance (or simply, the Finance Minister) is the head of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of India. One of the senior-most offices in the Union Cabinet, the Finance Minister is responsible for the fiscal policy of the government. As part of this, a key duty of the Finance Minister is to present the annual Union Budget in Parliament, which details the government's plan for taxation and spending in the coming financial year. Occasionally, he is assisted by the Minister of State of Finance and the lower-ranked Deputy Minister of Finance.

The first Finance Minister of independent India was R. K. Shanmukham Chetty, who also presented its first Budget. The current incumbent P. Chidambaram, of the Indian National Congress party, has held office since 31 July 2012; this is his third stint at the helm of the Finance Ministry. Chidambaram is assisted by Ministers of State Namo Narain Meena and S. S. Palanimanickam.

Famous quotes containing the words minister and/or finance:

Canst thou not minister to a mind diseased,
Pluck from the memory a rooted sorrow,
Raze out the written troubles of the brain,
And with some sweet oblivious antidote
Cleanse the fraught bosom of that perilous stuff
    Which weighs upon the heart?
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

There is an enormous chasm between the relatively rich and powerful people who make decisions in government, business, and finance and our poorer neighbors who must depend on these decisions to alleviate the problems caused by their lack of power and influence.
Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
