The new MG3 was showcased at the 2010 Beijing Auto Show in the form of the MG Zero concept car. The new model uses an all-new automotive platform with a wheelbase of 2.5 m, featuring MacPherson strut front suspension and a torsion beam rear axle. The development work took place in the United Kingdom, with production being slated to occur only in China. The car went on sale in China in the spring of 2011. Engine options were expected to comprise new 1.3, 1.5-litre and 1.5-litre Turbo petrol engines, rated at 67 hp (50 kW), 107 hp (80 kW) and 165 hp (123 kW) respectively, with either a five-speed manual transmission or an Italian AMT transmission. However, by summer of 2011 the 1.3 litre option seemed to have disappeared from the range, and the turbo Small Gasoline Engine had yet to debut by 2012. The engines available at launch (March 2011) comprised a naturally aspirated 1.3 and 1.5 VTi, with 65 kW (87 hp) and 80 kW (107 hp) respectively.

The new MG3 is aimed at the 18 to 28-year old age group, and is expected to go on sale in the UK in 2012. It will be built for Europe at the Longbridge plant in Birmingham alongside the larger MG6.

The new MG3 is also available in a crossover-style variant (similar to the Rover Streetwise and MG3 SW), known as the MG3 Xross.
