Mesoamerican Long Count Calendar - Calculating A Full Long Count Date

Calculating A Full Long Count Date

As stated, a full Long Count date not only includes the five digits of the Long Count, but the 2-character Tzolk'in and the two-character Haab' dates as well. The five digit Long Count can therefore be confirmed with the other four characters (the "calendar round date").

Taking as an example a Calendar Round date of 9.12.2.0.16 (Long Count) 5 Kib' (Tzolk'in) 14 Yaxk'in (Haab'). One can check whether this date is correct by the following calculation.

It is perhaps easier to find out how many days there are since 4 Ajaw 8 Kumk'u, and show how the date 5 Kib' 14 Yaxk'in is derived.

9 × 144000 = 1296000
12 × 7200 = 86400
2 × 360 = 720
0 × 20 = 0
16 × 1 = 16
Total days = 1383136

Famous quotes containing the words calculating, full, long, count and/or date:

Sin in this country has been always said to be rather calculating than impulsive.
    Frank Moore Colby (1865–1925)

Thou gav’st me life, but mortal; for that one
    Favour I’ll make full satisfaction:
For my life mortal, rise from out thy hearse,
And take a life immortal from my verse.
    Robert Herrick (1591–1674)

Meanwhile I, deserted, was lamenting a little to myself your long delays in foreign loves, until sleep with its pleasing wings compelled me, fallen.
    Propertius Sextus (c. 50–16 B.C.)

Every country has its own constitution; ours is absolutism moderated by assassination.
—Anonymous Russian. Quoted in Count Münster, Political Sketches of the State of Europe 1814-1867 (1868)

A preschool child does not emerge from your toddler on a given date or birthday. He becomes a child when he ceases to be a wayward, confusing, unpredictable and often balky person-in-the- making, and becomes a comparatively cooperative, eager-and-easy-to-please real human being—at least 60 per cent of the time.
    Penelope Leach (20th century)
