Medical Education in Hong Kong - Specialist Training

Specialist Training

A trainee has to undergo six years of supervised specialist training and pass in the final examinations held by Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Passing the final examination is a prerequisite to Fellowship of the Academy.

At the same time as working in hospitals, the trainees also prepare for examinations for admission into specialist medical colleges. Those successful in completing the requirements of their college program become a fellow of the academy and "specialists" in the case of most areas of medicine (and typically work in specialist private practice and/or as a "consultant" in a hospital).

Family medicine is recognized as a major specialty in Hong Kong. Specialists in family medicine have undertaken at least six years of accreditated training, and earned internationally renowned postgraduate medical qualifications as well as Fellowship of The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine just as their counterparts in hospital medicine or other medical fields.

The area [of toilet training] is one where a child really does possess the power to defy. Strong pressure leads to a powerful struggle. The issue then is not toilet training but who holds the reins—mother or child? And the child has most of the ammunition!
