- Ziaur Rahman, the President of Bangladesh, was assassinated, along with eight of his aides were assassinated as Rahman spent the night in Chittagong. Taking place at 4:00 am local time, the attack was planned by Major General Muhammed Manzur, whom Ziaur had recently fired as the army chief of staff. Lt. Col. Motiur Rahman killed the pajama-clad President Ziaur with an automatic rifle.
