Mathematical Descriptions of The Electromagnetic Field - Potential Field Approach

Potential Field Approach

Many times in the use and calculation of electric and magnetic fields, the approach used first computes an associated potential: the electric potential, V, for the electric field, and the magnetic potential, A, for the magnetic field. The electric potential is a scalar field, while the magnetic potential is a vector field. This is why sometimes the electric potential is called the scalar potential and the magnetic potential is called the vector potential. These potentials can be used to find their associated fields as follows:

Famous quotes containing the words potential, field and/or approach:

The planet on which we live is poorly organized, many areas are overpopulated, others are reserved for a few, technology’s potential is only in part realized, and most people are starving.
    Friedrich Dürrenmatt (1921–1990)

Last night I watched my brothers play,
The gentle and the reckless one,
In a field two yards away.
For half a century they were gone
Beyond the other side of care
To be among the peaceful dead.
    Edwin Muir (1887–1959)

Oh! mystery of man, from what a depth
Proceed thy honours. I am lost, but see
In simple childhood something of the base
On which thy greatness stands; but this I feel,
That from thyself it comes, that thou must give,
Else never canst receive. The days gone by
Return upon me almost from the dawn
Of life: the hiding-places of man’s power
Open; I would approach them, but they close.
    William Wordsworth (1770–1850)
