Nolan is the chair of the NASA industry advisory council. On February 3, 2010, it was announced that Nolan endorsed Democratic gubernatorial candidate, and former Governor of Oregon John Kitzhaber. The Kitzhaber campaign released a statement by Nolan on her endorsement for Kitzhaber and it read:
