Banning Teen
In 2011 Marmonte League decided to ban Derrick Brown from playing basketball. After Thousand Oaks (Calif.) High basketball coach Richard Endres decided to become guardian of Derrick. Derrick was the victim of horrific violence in 2009, when his stepfather attempted to kill both Brown and his mother by stabbing them in the face.
At the hearing to determine Brown's eligibility, Marmonte league principals barred Endres from speaking or arguing on behalf of Brown. "They don't like it that he's living with me", said Endres, regarding Marmonte principals. The decision to ban the teen from playing is widely disagreed upon by the community.
