Marilyn Stowe - Sally Clark

Sally Clark

In November 1999, Sally Clark was convicted of the murder of two of her sons. Her first son had died suddenly within a few weeks of his birth in 1996. After her second son died in a similar manner, she was arrested in 1998 and tried for the murder of both infants. The convictions were upheld at appeal in October 2000.

Marilyn Stowe volunteered her involvement in the case, providing her services free of charge because she felt that "something was not right". She obtained key medical reports, which showed that one of the babies could have died from natural causes. This evidence had been known to the prosecution's pathologist, Alan Williams, since February 1998, but had not been shared with other medical witnesses, police or lawyers. The Clark family's solicitor described Marilyn Stowe as "the woman who's going to get Sally out of prison".

Sally Clark's convictions were overturned in a second appeal on 29 January 2003. The prosecution's pathologist, Alan Williams, was found guilty of "serious professional misconduct" by the General Medical Council.

Hard times accounted in large part for the fact that the exposition was a financial disappointment in its first year, but Sally Rand and her fan dancers accomplished what applied science had failed to do, and the exposition closed in 1934 with a net profit, which was donated to participating cultural institutions, excluding Sally Rand.

The measure of your quality as a public person, as a citizen, is the gap between what you do and what you say.
