The UCI has established a championship series for such events, the Marathon World Cup. The UCI rules limit events to distances between 40 km (25 mi) and 120 km (75 mi) and for 2006 limits event to New Zealand, Hungary, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and the Netherlands. Almost all of the parcipitants are elite professional mountain bike racers. There is an annual world championship event, the UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Championships. The distances of the marathon mountain bike series for 2011-2012 are minimum 70 kilometres (43 mi) to maximum 100 kilometres (62 mi) for women and minimum 80 kilometres (50 mi) to maximum 120 kilometres (75 mi) for men. The race can be run over a single lap, or multi-lap with a maximum number laps of three.
