Maltese Nationality Law - Maltese Citizenship By Marriage

Maltese Citizenship By Marriage

The foreign spouse of a Maltese citizen may acquire Maltese citizenship by marriage after 5 years of marriage. Residence in Malta is not required.

  • Widows and widowers of a Maltese citizen (where the spouse died within the first 5 years of marriage) may apply for Maltese citizenship by marriage 5 years after the date of the marriage to their deceased spouse.
  • Persons separated from a Maltese spouse may still apply for Maltese citizenship by marriage provided they lived together for 5 years
  • Prior to 10 February 2000 the 5 year period of marriage did not apply, while before 1 August 1989 only the foreign wife of a Maltese man was eligible for citizenship by marriage

Despite such measures, marriages of convenience between Maltese nationals and women from Eastern Europe or Arab/Maghreb men continue to take place.

Famous quotes containing the words maltese, citizenship and/or marriage:

Well, Wilmer, I’m sorry indeed to lose you. But I want you to know I couldn’t be fonder of you if you were my own son. Well, if you lose a son it’s possible to get another. There’s only one Maltese falcon.
    John Huston (1906–1987)

To see self-sufficiency as the hallmark of maturity conveys a view of adult life that is at odds with the human condition, a view that cannot sustain the kinds of long-term commitments and involvements with other people that are necessary for raising and educating a child or for citizenship in a democratic society.
    Carol Gilligan (20th century)

A woman asking “Am I good? Am I satisfied?” is extremely selfish. The less women fuss about themselves, the less they talk to other women, the more they try to please their husbands, the happier the marriage is going to be.
    Barbara Cartland (b. 1901)
