The Magistrates Court of the Australian Capital Territory is a court of summary jurisdiction in Canberra, Australia. The court deals with the majority of less serious criminal cases and the majority of small civil cases in that territory. The court is located on Knowles Place near London Circuit, Canberra at Civic. It is a relatively new building, having previously occupied the older building next door to it which is now occupied by the Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.

The current Chief Magistrate is Lorraine Walker, who succeeded now Justice Burns in the role. Burns was appointed to the position in December 2009. Burns replaced departing Chief Magistrate Ron Cahill, whose appointment came to an end on 10 November 2009, with the position filled in the interregnum by Magistrate Peter Dingwall.

Famous quotes containing the words magistrates, court, australian, capital and/or territory:

If magistrates had true justice, and if physicians had the true art of healing, they would have no occasion for square caps; the majesty of these sciences would of itself be venerable enough. But having only imaginary knowledge, they must employ those silly tools that strike the imagination with which they have to deal; and thereby, in fact, they inspire respect.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)

In the court of the movie Owner, none criticized, none doubted. And none dared speak of art. In the Owner’s mind art was a synonym for bankruptcy.... The movie Owners are the only troupe in the history of entertainment that has never been seduced by the adventure of the entertainment world.
    Ben Hecht (1893–1964)

The Australian mind, I can state with authority, is easily boggled.
    Charles Osborne (b. 1927)

For mankind, speech with a capital S is especially meaningful and committing, more than the content communicated. The outcry of the newborn and the sound of the bells are fraught with mystery more than the baby’s woeful face or the venerable tower.
    Paul Goodman (1911–1972)

A Country is not a mere territory; the particular territory is only its foundation. The Country is the idea which rises upon that foundation; it is the sentiment of love, the sense of fellowship which binds together all the sons of that territory.
    Giuseppe Mazzini (1805–1872)
