Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music

Machina II/The Friends & Enemies Of Modern Music

Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music is the sixth album by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins. It was released for free on the Internet on September 5, 2000. Plans for a standard physical release, bundled with the first part Machina/The Machines of God, were revealed to happen sometime in 2013.

The album itself, a double LP, was packaged with three EPs full of B-sides and alternate versions. Both Machina albums are loose concept albums telling the story of "a rock star gone mad". Machina II was the last Smashing Pumpkins studio album until the band reformed in 2007.

Famous quotes containing the words friends, enemies, modern and/or music:

    There the traveler meets, aghast,
    Sheeted memories of the past—
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
As they pass the wanderer by—
White-robed forms of friends long given,
In agony, to the earth—and heaven.
    Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849)

Rome, if you do not wish me to betray you, make enemies that I can hate!
    Pierre Corneille (1606–1684)

The complaint ... about modern steel furniture, modern glass houses, modern red bars and modern streamlined trains and cars is that all these objets modernes, while adequate and amusing in themselves, tend to make the people who use them look dated. It is an honest criticism. The human race has done nothing much about changing its own appearance to conform to the form and texture of its appurtenances.
    —E.B. (Elwyn Brooks)

    Taylor, the Shakespeare of divines.
His words are music in my ear,
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)
