A peculiar situation exists in the case of the modern chief of MacDonnell of Antrim. In Gaelic Ireland he is known as the MacDonnell of the Glens, and the currently recognized Chief of the Name in Ireland is Randal MacDonnell of the Glens. His style he takes after his ancestors the former Bissett lords of the Glens.

However, the chiefship is now also claimed by the current Earl of Antrim, but with no legal basis, as he is not a male line descendant of a MacDonnell and is originally surnamed Kerr, being a male line descendant of the 3rd son, Lord Mark Robert Kerr, of William Kerr, 5th Marquess of Lothian. Yet he has been recognized, in spite of the Irish decision and Gaelic law, by the current High Council of Clan Donald, which is based in Scotland and has no authority over the Irish sept.

Famous quotes containing the word chief:

In his very rejection of art Walt Whitman is an artist. He tried to produce a certain effect by certain means and he succeeded.... He stands apart, and the chief value of his work is in its prophecy, not in its performance. He has begun a prelude to larger themes. He is the herald to a new era. As a man he is the precursor of a fresh type. He is a factor in the heroic and spiritual evolution of the human being. If Poetry has passed him by, Philosophy will take note of him.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)

When we do not know the truth of a thing, it is of advantage that there should exist a common error which determines the mind of man.... For the chief malady of man is restless curiosity about things which he cannot understand; and it is not so bad for him to be in error as to be curious to no purpose.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)

Go to the ant, you lazybones; consider its ways, and be wise. Without having any chief or officer or ruler, it prepares its food in summer, and gathers its sustenance in harvest.
    Bible: Hebrew, Proverbs 6:6-8.
