Britain's First Dedicated Motorway Car Share Lane
In 2007, work started on the M606 to create the UK's first motorway carsharing lane (also known as high-occupancy vehicle or HOV lane). The 1.7-mile (2.7 km) lane scheme is on the M606 southbound and will allow vehicles with more than one person in the car a fast track onto the M62 eastbound at Junction 26.

“When Britain first, at Heavens command,
Arose from out the azure main,
This was the charter of her land,

“Picture the prince, such as most of them are today: a man ignorant of the law, well-nigh an enemy to his peoples advantage, while intent on his personal convenience, a dedicated voluptuary, a hater of learning, freedom and truth, without a thought for the interests of his country, and measuring everything in terms of his own profit and desires.”
—Desiderius Erasmus (c. 14661536)
“When a man opens the car door for his wife, its either a new car or a new wife.”
—Prince Philip (b. 1921)
“I love this child. Red-hairedpatient and gentle like her motherfey and funny like her father. When she giggles I can hear him when he and I were young. I am part of this child. It may be only because we share genes and that therefore smell familiar to each other. . . . It may be that a part of me lives in her in some important way. . . . But for now, its jelly beans and Old MacDonald that unite us.”
—Robert Fulghum (20th century)
“The prairies were dust. Day after day, summer after summer, the scorching winds blew the dust and the sun was brassy in a yellow sky. Crop after crop failed. Again and again the barren land must be mortgaged for taxes and food and next years seed. The agony of hope ended when there was not harvest and no more credit, no money to pay interest and taxes; the banker took the land. Then the bank failed.”
—Rose Wilder Lane (18861968)
