The East German competitors (Ortrun Enderlein (2:28.04) and Anna-Maria Müller (2:28.06)) were disqualified after they were accused of heating their runners, which would give them a speed advantage. Nevertheless as there was never any real evidence for those allegation presented (not even after the evaluation of the Stasi files in 2006) it remains unclear, whether this was true or not.
