Personal Life
Gutteridge was born in Lewisham, London, England, the eldest daughter of Bernard Hugh Gutteridge by his marriage to Nabila Farah Karima Halim, the daughter of H.H. Prince Muhammad Said Bey Halim of Egypt and his British second wife, Nabila Malika (née Morwena Bird).
Through her mother, Gutteridge is a great-great-great-granddaughter of Muhammad Ali of Egypt, a Muslim subject of the Ottoman Empire (likely of Albanian ethnicity) who became the father of modern Egypt. As such, she is a distant cousin of Egypt's last king, Farouk.
She has two siblings:
- Anne-Marie Morwena Gutteridge (1958-)
- Cosima Farah Gutteridge (1962-)
Gutteridge married, in London, in 1978, Andrew Hawkins, a son of the actor Jack Hawkins. They had one daughter, Alice Isabella Valentine Hawkins (1979-), before divorcing.

Famous quotes containing the words personal and/or life:
“Wherever the State touches the personal life of the infant, the child, the youth, or the aged, helpless, defective in mind, body or moral nature, there the State enters womans peculiar sphere, her sphere of motherly succor and training, her sphere of sympathetic and self-sacrificing ministration to individual lives.”
—Anna Garlin Spencer (18511931)
“Ones prime is elusive. You little girls, when you grow up, must be on the alert to recognize your prime at whatever time of your life it may occur. You must then live it to the full.”
—Muriel Spark (b. 1918)
