The role was originated on October 29, 1993 by Jonathan Jackson, who portrayed the character until May 24, 1999. During this time, Jackson received seven Daytime Emmy nominations, and won for Best Younger Actor in 1993, 1998 and 1999.

The role was then played by Jacob Young from February 25, 2000 to February 10, 2003. In 2000, Young also guest starred on the sketch comedy series MADtv, making a small cameo as the character.

Greg Vaughan stepped into the role on February 20, 2003. Vaughan described his screen test to Soap Opera Digest, "I was a little bit intimidated. I knew about the character, the foundation of the story. I knew it was a difficult task that I was about to take on." After almost seven years with the show, Vaughan was let go to allow for Jackson to reprise the role for the first time in over ten years. ABC's official statement said that, "Greg Vaughn has decided to vacate the role to explore new opportunities." Vaughan last aired on October 20, 2009, while Jackson first aired on October 27, 2009.

In 2011, Jackson won his fourth Daytime Emmy, this time for Best Supporting Actor. In November 2011, it was announced that Jackson would once again vacate the role of Lucky due the heavy amount of work he was receiving. TV Guide reported that Jackson attempted to negotiate with the network for a lighter schedule and to be repaired with on-screen love interest Rebecca Herbst (Elizabeth Webber), but was denied on both accounts. Jackson explained to TV Guide, "I love to work hard but I've been at maximum capacity in terms of mental and emotional output for months on end and it has become too difficult. I am extremely thankful that they wanted to give me all those storylines with so much depth, but there's just no balance. I have a wife and three kids and other things in life I have to think about. I just knew I couldn't sustain the schedule at GH and that kind of emotion for much longer. It was just too intense." Jackson also confirmed the character would not die or be recast.

In 2012, Jackson won his fifth Daytime Emmy and second consecutive win for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Famous quotes containing the word casting:

This I do know and can say to you: Our country is in more danger now than at any time since the Declaration of Independence. We don’t dare follow the Lindberghs, Wheelers and Nyes, casting suspicion, sowing discord around the leadership of Franklin D. Roosevelt. We don’t want revolution among ourselves.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)

    All we know
Is that we are a little early, that
    Today has that special, lapidary
    Todayness that the sunlight reproduces
Faithfully in casting twig-shadows on blithe
Sidewalks. No previous day would have been like this.
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)

Reason sits firm and holds the reins, and she will not let the feelings burst away and hurry her to wild chasms. The passions may rage furiously, like true heathens, as they are; and the desires may imagine all sorts of vain things: but judgement shall still have the last word in every argument, and the casting vote in every decision.
    Charlotte Brontë (1816–1855)
