Economic Activity

During Zambia's painful privatisation period, the town was virtually transformed into a virtual ghost town with thousands of miners being laid off by the Indian run RAMCOZ. During the Presidency of Levy Mwanawasa, the town however was revived when Luanshya Copper Mines resumed full scale mining production, thousands got employed although that was to be short lived when the mining operator ran into financial problems.

However the rise of China brought in another dimension, the mines were quickly taken over by a Chinese firm. That came with its own problems. the Chinese workforce have constantly been accused of gross negligence and flouting Labour laws.

In 2011 three Chinese workers were arrested for allegedly molesting local girls by taking advantage of their deprived economic status. The sad tale of Chinese Investment is all too visible, early in 2012, then Minister for Labour and Sport and area Member of Parliament, Chishimba Kambwili made a surprise stop over at the multi - million dollar Mulyashi Mine Project only to be turned down by its Chinese employers in a show down that came to epitomize just how powerful the Chinese presence is.

Famous quotes containing the words economic and/or activity:

What exacerbates the strain in the working class is the absence of money to pay for services they need, economic insecurity, poor daycare, and lack of dignity and boredom in each partner’s job. What exacerbates it in upper-middle class is the instability of paid help and the enormous demands of the career system in which both partners become willing believers. But the tug between traditional and egalitarian models of marriage runs from top to bottom of the class ladder.
    Arlie Hochschild (20th century)

Every writer is necessarily a critic—that is, each sentence is a skeleton accompanied by enormous activity of rejection; and each selection is governed by general principles concerning truth, force, beauty, and so on.... The critic that is in every fabulist is like the iceberg—nine-tenths of him is under water.
    Thornton Wilder (1897–1975)
