Louisiana Highway 1141

Louisiana Highway 1141 is a state highway in Cameron, Louisiana. It lasts 1.5 miles (2.4 km) and connects the East Bank Calcascieu Ship Channel with Louisiana Highway 27.

This road was part of the original highway along the Louisiana Gulf Coast before the Calcasieu Ship Channel was constructed.

The majority of this state highway connects to no other road as it is situated on Monkey Island, an artificially created island situated between the ship channel and a bend in the Calcasieu River (for which the ship channel provides a cut off). The Louisiana DOTD operated a ferry for the few residents that lived on the island, and to connect LA 1141 to the mainland. This ferry service caused controversy in the mid-1990s when several state legislators complained about this expenditure of public funds which benefited very few people. In 2005, Hurricane Rita destroyed all structures on the island and displaced its residents, which led to the end (for now) of ferry operations.

Famous quotes containing the words louisiana and/or highway:

The recent attempt to secure a charter from the State of North Dakota for a lottery company, the pending effort to obtain from the State of Louisiana a renewal of the charter of the Louisiana State Lottery, and the establishment of one or more lottery companies at Mexican towns near our border, have served the good purpose of calling public attention to an evil of vast proportions.
    Benjamin Harrison (1833–1901)

My manner is the footnote to your immoral
Beauty, that leads me with a magic hair
Up the spun highway of a vanishing hill
    To Words....
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)
