69th Anniversary and The Mayor's "Good Luck Candle"

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa lit a piece of Los Angeles’ history at the Jr. Phil’s 69th Anniversary Concert Spectacular on April 26, 2006 when he lit the orchestra’s “Mayor’s Good Luck Candle,” presented to founder-conductor Ernst Katz and his young people’s orchestra by the citizens of Olvera Street in 1947. First lit by Los Angeles Mayor Fletcher Bowren at the orchestra’s 10th Anniversary, the candle symbolizes the important connection between the city of Los Angeles and youth in music as fostered by Katz.

Famous quotes containing the words anniversary, mayor, luck and/or candle:

The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more
    John Adams (1735–1826)

If a large city can, after intense intellectual efforts, choose for its mayor a man who merely will not steal from it, we consider it a triumph of the suffrage.
    Frank Moore Colby (1865–1925)

... it seems to have been my luck to stumble into various forms of progress, to which I have been of the smallest possible use; yet for whose sake I have suffered the discomfort attending all action in moral improvements, without the happiness of knowing that this was clearly quite worth while.
    Elizabeth Stuart Phelps (1844–1911)

“... I have what no young man can have
    Because he loves too much.
Words I have that can pierce the heart,
But what can he do but touch?”
    Day-break and a candle end.

    William Butler Yeats (1865–1939)
