Lord High Chancellor of Sweden

Lord High Chancellor Of Sweden

The Lord High Chancellor (Swedish: rikskansler, literally Chancellor of the Realm or Imperial Chancellor) was a prominent and influential office in Sweden, from 1561 until 1680, excluding periods when the office was out of use. The office holder was a member of the Privy Council of Sweden. From 1634, the Lord High Chancellor was one of five Great Officers of the Realm, who were the most prominent members of the Privy Council and headed a governmental branch each—the Lord High Chancellor headed the Privy Council Chancellery. In 1792, more than a century after the office's abolishment in 1680, it was revived. Seven years later, in 1799, it was removed once again.

Famous quotes containing the words lord, high and/or chancellor:

Men are apt to mistake, or at least to seem to mistake, their own talents, in hopes, perhaps, of misleading others to allow them that which they are conscious they do not possess. Thus lord Hardwicke valued himself more upon being a great minister of state, which he certainly was not, than upon being a great magistrate, which he certainly was.
Philip Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl Chesterfield (1694–1773)

Whatever is felt upon the page without being specifically named there—that, one might say, is created. It is the inexplicable presence of the thing not named, of the overtone divined by the ear but not heard by it, the verbal mood, the emotional aura of the fact or the thing or the deed, that gives high quality to the novel or the drama, as well as to poetry itself.
    Willa Cather (1873–1947)

No woman in my time will be Prime Minister or Chancellor or Foreign Secretary—not the top jobs. Anyway I wouldn’t want to be Prime Minister. You have to give yourself 100%.
    Margaret Thatcher (b. 1925)
