Fiscal Emergency

On February 7, 2012, the City of Long Beach declared a fiscal emergency after the city was $48 million in debt. Former Police Commissioner Thomas Sofield, Sr. retired after the city declared a fiscal emergency and Michael Tagney was appointed as the new Police Commissioner. In June 2012, six LBPD officers claimed that they had been unfairly demoted for supporting Republican Party candidates in the city's 2011 elections. The City of Long Beach and the Long Beach PBA denied the allegations.
