Unrecognized tribes are organizations of people who claim to be historically, culturally and genetically related to historic Native American Indian tribes but who have not been officially recognized as legitimate indigenous nations by the larger United States federal government or by individual states. The following are groups that claim to be Native American Indians/Aboriginal First Nations by ethnicity, but whose historic and cultural legitimacy are not recognized by either the federal government through the Bureau of Indian Affairs or any state government in the United States, and whose claims here have not been tested.
