List of Universities in Nicaragua

This is a list of universities in Nicaragua. Among other excellent educational institutions, the two main universities are the Central American University (Universidad Centroamericana - UCA) and the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Nicaragua—UNAN) private and public respectively.

As one of the historic capitals of literature in the Spanish speaking world, Nicaragua also carries a long history of excellence in higher education. Wars and natural disasters, however, drastically diminished Nicaraguan prestige. Starting from scratch and putting bright minds to work together, the last twenty years have seen gigantic steps towards the re-building of that same excellence. No country in the region gives as much political and social agency to college and university students as Nicaragua does. As it can be seen from the early anti-Somoza struggles to the world famous and award winning National Literacy Campaign and the enormous political and social changes that have been greatly influenced by student movements in the recent years.

In some events Nicaraguan colleges' broad involvement in the political arena represents a problem. Particular political parties use the institutions' strong student organizations to promote their agendas, which in several cases has resulted in unnecessary clashes between opposing groups. Upon acknowledging this phenomenon, one of the main tasks for the current student body is finding a way of inciting to active and positive involvement, balanced with dialogue and non-violent practices.

Modern tourist guides have helped raised tourist expectations. And they have provided the natives—from Kaiser Wilhelm down to the villagers of Chichacestenango—with a detailed and itemized list of what is expected of them and when. These are the up-to- date scripts for actors on the tourists’ stage.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)

Love’s boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and it’s useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.
    Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930)

The rush to books and universities is like the rush to the public house. People want to drown their realization of the difficulties of living properly in this grotesque contemporary world, they want to forget their own deplorable inefficiency as artists in life.
    Aldous Huxley (1894–1963)
