The story begins in a magic world called Halkeginia. At Tristain Academy, Louise Vallière wakes up, gets dressed, and heads to class. Her teacher asks her to perform magic: to change pebbles into bronze. As she walks up to the table, her peers whisper the name "Zero", and as soon as she casts the spell, the room explodes. Despite being from a famous magician family, Louise has never been able to successfully cast a single spell. On the day of the familiar spirit summoning, Kirche, an attractive redhead, summons a fire salamander. Guiche, a vain guy with blond hair, summons a mole. Last, Louise summons a human being, Saito Hiraga, a high school boy from Tokyo, Japan does not understand what is going on in Louise's world since they speak different languages. Louise wants a re-do, but cannot break the school's traditions, so she makes a contract with Saito by kissing him on the lips. Runes appear on Saito's left hand. Later, Louise tries to shut him up by performing a silence spell which backfires and allows Saito to speak and to understand Louise's language. Saito is not sure about his situation until he sees the two moons in the sky and realizes he is in another world.

In an abrupt departure from his normal life, Saito must deal with being Louise's familiar. In the morning, Saito dresses Louise as they go to breakfast but instead of eating at the table, he only gets a piece of bread. Saito meets a kind maid, Siesta. Unhappy with the arrogance of nobles, Saito decides to mock Guiche's two-timing nature. This provokes Guiche into challenging him to a duel. Despite being severely beaten up by Guiche's magic, Saito refuses to bow down. Impressed, Guiche tosses him a sword to even the playing field. In an unexpected turn of events, the runes etched on Saito's hand begin to glow the moment he grasps the sword. Feeling a surge of energy, Saito manages to defeat Guiche. However, he soon collapses after the fight from fatigue. Mr. Colbert and the principal Osmond suspect Saito may be a legendary familiar.
03 03 "Feverish Temptation"

With his victory over Guiche, Saito has become a little more popular among commoners and several nobles. Louise has Saito wash her panties. He learns why the peers call her the "Zero". Siesta and the commoners give Saito leftovers since he is starving while calling him "Our Sword". Kirche in particular has chosen him as her next boyfriend. In a devious plan, she attempts to seduce him, although this fails when Louise finds out. After considering Saito's hidden talent, Louise drags him to town to buy a sword. Kirche matches Louise's gift with a more impressive sword, which causes more conflict between Saito and Louise. Louise's sword later reveals himself as the talking sword Derflinger.
04 04 "A Maid's Crisis"

Longueville the secretary beats up Osmond for his perversions. Siesta is sold to a royal family from out of town, presumably to be mistress to the head noble Count Mott. Disgusted by the lack of regard that nobles have for commoners, Saito tries his best to rescue her. They make a deal where Count Mott asks for a particular family heirloom book from the Germania family. Louise searches for Saito, who has asked Kirche for the book, but Kirche wants him to date her. As Saito attempts to take on the nobles with Kirche's shiny sword, but he doesn't feel the surge of energy, Louise and the others arrive just in time to prevent Saito from getting easily killed by Count Mott. Kirche agrees to give Count Mott the book, and they trade for Siesta's freedom. Saito catches a glimpse of the family treasure and is surprised to find that it is a rather old (April 1975) porn magazine from Japan. Afterwards, Siesta kisses Saito on the cheek.
05 05 "Tristein's Princess"

The familiar exhibition is a day away, and Louise is feeling rather depressed about it. Not only does Saito have nothing impressive to show (he says he's good at washing panties), but this year the Princess of Tristain is watching as well, which makes the event more important. As night approaches, desperation sets in as Saito is unable to produce an act worthy of praise. A sudden mystery visitor turns out to be Princess Henrietta herself, and she explains how she and Louise are childhood friends. The next day, Saito performs a weak sword swinging demonstration only to be dragged off-stage early by Louise. They witness a robbery in progress by Fouquet and her earth golem. Louise tries to stop her with her magic, but her blast misses the golem; it hits the tower wall and breaches the magic barrier to the vault. Tabitha and her dragon familiar, Sylphid, fly by to help. Fouquet steals the fabled Staff of Destruction and easily makes her escape.
06 06 "A Thief's Identity"

Worried that the princess may be blamed for Fouquet's theft, Louise volunteers in front of the school administrators to go and catch her. Kirche and Tabitha volunteer as well. They travel to the place of Fouquet's last sighting with Longueville. Kirche, Tabitha, and Saito enter an empty, dusty house; Tabitha discovers the hiding place of the Staff of Destruction. Fouquet's golem appears to face Louise outside. Wanting to show her worth, Louise tries to fight the golem with some spells but fails. As she is about to be crushed, Saito rushes in to save her. Her confidence broken, Louise breaks into tears. Saito is moved by this and attacks the golem in her name. He uses Kirche's shiny sword but it breaks as it hits the golem; Derflinger calls Saito to use him. Saito draws Derf, and the runes on his hands glow again. He tears down the golem's legs, but they reform shortly afterward. Louise tries to help by taking out the Staff of Destruction, but Saito recognizes it as a M72 rocket launcher, and with his rune enabled abilities, fires it at the golem and destroys it in one shot. Longueville claims the Staff and reveals herself to be Fouquet all along; she used the scenario to discover how to use the Staff. She fires it at the group, but nothing happens, as it is a one-use item. Saito knocks Fouquet down and she surrenders. Later, Osmond reveals that 30 years ago, he was fighting a monster when a man (a soldier from another world) used the Staff to save his life. After the man died, Osmond buried the man and kept the other Staff. The school holds a ball to celebrate the three heroines; Louise asks Saito for a dance and thanks him for saving her.
07 07 "Louise's Part-Time Job"

Henrietta congratulates Louise for capturing Fouquet; she offers her hand to Saito, but Saito kisses her on the lips! Henrietta asks Louise and Saito to work undercover in town to figure out which nobles are taking advantage of the lesser ranked commoners. Louise wagers all their money in hopes of affording an expensive hotel room, and ends up broke. Refusing to ask for more money, Saito and Louise find work at a tavern called Charming Fairy Inn run by Scarron and his daughter, Jessica. Scarron holds a contest for the waitresses: whoever gets the most tips gets a large reward plus the chance to wear a special maid outfit. Louise is unable to earn any waitress tips because of her flaring temper, but her moment of salvation comes when an arrogant noble enters the bar. After bringing him to justice, the noble runs off, but leaves a large amount of money; the "tip" enables Louise to win the contest and put on the maid outfit.
08 08 "Tabitha's Secret"

It's summer vacation, and many students are traveling back to their families. Kirche goes along with Tabitha to her home. As a result, Louise and Saito are alone for once; however, mischief is still plentiful. Kirche learns that Tabitha's real name is Charlotte, the Princess of Gallia, and she has a rather tragic past which involves her now insane mother. Meanwhile, Montmorency is upset that Guiche has been flirting with other girls, and makes a love potion to try to slip into Guiche's drink. Saito obtains a large pot that was about to be thrown away and, at night, fashions it into a hot tub, similar to those in Japan. While Saito relaxes in the tub, Siesta passes by and joins him, much to his embarrassment. Louise sees the two together and becomes so frustrated that she interrupts Guiche and Montmorency, and chugs the drink with the love potion. As expected, when Saito returns to her room, Louise gets flustered and falls completely in love with him.
09 09 "Louise's Change of Heart"

Louise continues her lovey-dovey antics on Saito, which freaks him out, as well as causing misunderstandings with Siesta. In desperation, Saito demands that Montmorency create an antidote, but she refuses to help, until it is explained that making potions that change a person's emotions is illegal. He tries to explain to Siesta about the love potion, but she does not believe him. As the antidote requires "the tear of a water elemental", Montmorency and Guiche lead Saito and love-struck Louise to Lagdorian Lake and contact a Water Spirit, who was upset that her precious treasure was stolen, that she has flooded the land to search for it. They fight two cloaked intruders who turn out to be Kirche and Tabitha. Saito promises to find whatever the Water Spirit has lost. The spirit trusts his word as "Gandálfr", and gives him the antidote.
10 10 "A Princess' Request"

Having taken care of the love potion, Louise and Saito receive a new mission. In order to strengthen her country's alliance, Princess Henrietta is to be wed to the Emperor of Germania. Louise and Saito must deliver a letter to Prince Wales of Albion. Since the princess can't go see the prince cause Albion in a state of civil war. Guiche overhears the conversation and volunteers to aid the princess, much to Louise and Saito's ire, and Henrietta accepts. Saito research about Gandálfr and legendary Void magic from Colbert. On the day of departure, an escort arrives and is revealed to be Wardes, captain of the griffioen squad, and Louise's fiancé. Saito grows jealous as they journey to the port city of La Rochelle. Later, Derflinger talks to Saito about Gandalfr, and how only Gandalfr can use Derflinger. Saito challenges Wardes to a quick duel but Wardes easily wins, and mocks Saito's promise to protect Louise. Wardes convinces Louise they should go on ahead as if Saito and Guiche have ditched them. They aboard the ship to Albion the floating continent.
11 11 "Louise's Marriage"

Wardes and Louise arrive in Albion, and meet up with Prince Wales; Louise delivers the letter, and learns of the power behind the nobility uprising in Albion. Meanwhile, Saito and Guiche think of a way to get to Albion after being delayed by Fouquet's sudden arrival, Kirche and Tabitha shows up. Later, when Wardes abruptly asks Louise to marry him, she learns that Wardes is part of the power behind the rebellion and realized that Wardes is a threat to Wales, Louise tries to refuse his offer, but one of Wardes' allies, Cromwell, arrives with a mind-control ring and forces her to consent. With the Prince as the minister, the marriage proceeds and is nearly complete until Saito bursts into the church. He snaps Louise out of her trance and rescues her. In response, Wardes kills Prince Wales, steals the letter, and reveals that he is part of the Reconquista, a group of rebels against the Albion government. Saito kisses Louise as they fly home on Sylphid.
12 12 "Zero Treasure"

Louise reports to Henrietta about Wales and the princess’ wedding was annulled. Later, Louise warns Osmond about Reconquista, she learns about Void magic and Gandalfr from him. Saito and Louise has an argument, and then later he asks Siesta about a dragon from another world. Saito goes with Siesta to her home village of Talbes, afterwards, Louise and others follow them. The gang has located the rare dragon, which Siesta's family has kept as an heirloom. Saito finds a tombstone with Japanese epitaph on it. The dragon turns out to be a A6M Zero Fighter, a Japanese aircraft used in World War II. It is revealed that Siesta's great-grandfather is Japanese and was magically transported to Halkeginia. They bring the fighter back to school. Colbert explained that two "dragons" had flown during a solar eclipse, but one disappeared. Colbert suggests that the timing of the second pilot (Siesta's great-grandfather) was off, and that the solar eclipse ended before the second pilot was able to fly through the portal. Saito concludes that the other pilot returned home, and this is his chance to return home as well.
13 13 "Louise the Void"

Saito lets Louise know that he will be departing in three days, at the upcoming solar eclipse, in order to return home to Japan, but when she hears this she brushes it off as if she doesn't care, which angers Saito. He waits for Louise to return from her meeting, where the war between Albion and Tristain is declared inevitable. Princess Henrietta assembles a military force that conscripts the boys from the academy. Louise walks into a sleeping Saito whereupon she says goodbye. The next morning, Saito wakes to find a letter in which Louise has written, "You're fired! Just go wherever you want!" Louise decides to join the princess in war. The next day, Saito gets on his Zero fighter plane while Princess Henrietta advances with the Tristain military to intercept the invading Albion force. But instead of flying straight to the eclipse, Saito helps shoot down Albion's dragon squadrons, who are unable to keep up with the plane's speed. Saito runs out of ammo and is attacked by Wardes on a wind dragon. Tabitha, Kirche, and Louise help Saito. Louise jumps from Sylphid to Saito's plane, guided by Tabitha's magic. Swept by her feeling towards Saito being harmed, Louise and Saito finally made a connection. Louise unlocks her Void magic for the first time and casts a powerful spell known as 'Explosion' which destroys the entirety of Albion's aerial attack force including Wardes. Fouquet escaped and doesn't come back. After the battle, with the solar eclipse past and the Zero Fighter nearly destroyed, Saito and Louise sit by the plane's wreckage where they have an argument once again about Saito's firing. They end up kissing, and renew the contract between them according to Louise. Cromwell tries to hypnotize Kirche and Tabitha with the Ring of Andavari, but Guiche saves the girls with a lucky hit. Later, they are all given medals by the princess, and Tabitha gets the ring back from Cromwell who stole it from the Water Spirit. Louise was so excited to show Saito her medal only to find him with Siesta chatting. Louise punishes Saito, using her newly fashioned explosion spell.
