List Of Teachers Of Advaita Vedanta

Advaita Vedanta is alive in Guru-Shishya parampara. Brahadaranyaka Upanishad states - 'atma vare drshtavya, srotavya, mantavya, nididhysitavyah'. It does not say 'atma vare pathitavya'. Sankara bhagavdpada has stated in his Mundaka-Bhashyam 'asampradayavit murkhavat upekshaniya' - meaning a person not belonging to the tradition has to be denounced like a fool. Strong words, but that is how it is.

Seeds of Advaitic thoughts are seen in the Rgveda also. However, the credit for making it a systematic, logical philosophical system goes to Sankara Bhagavatpada. However, names of the Acaryas who have contributed significantly to Advaita Vedanta has to be recorded for posterity. This article strives to document as many of them as possible, with list of their work.

Prasthanatraya in Advaita Vedanta

The canonical texts taught and studied in Advaita Vedanta are 1) the Upanishads, 2) the Bhagavad-Gita, and 3) the Brahmasutra. Brahmasutra is authored by Badarayana (around 400 BC. Most scholars agree to this). However concept of Advaita was available even before badarayana's period. And he has referred to the earlier Advaita Acaryas in his Brahmasutra, which is furnished below.

Adi Shankaracharya was the most prominent in the tradition of Advaita Vedanta to formulate its doctrine in his many works.
