Further information: Puzzle video game

Puzzle games consist primarily of solving some form of puzzle. This may involve placing blocks into a form in specified patterns, like Tetris, or any of a number of other challenges. The player may need to perform actions in a specified time limit, or may have unlimited time to act, and the game mechanics may allow for multiple players, but the main focus is solving the puzzle. For games that balance puzzle elements with platform elements (like Lemmings or The Lost Vikings), look for the puzzle sub-genre under Platform games.

Famous quotes containing the word puzzle:

Waiting for the race to become official, he began to feel as if he had as much effect on the final outcome of the operation as a single piece of a jumbo jigsaw puzzle has to its predetermined final design. Only the addition of the missing fragments of the puzzle would reveal if the picture was as he guessed it would be.
    Stanley Kubrick (b. 1928)

What are you now? If we could touch one another,
if these our separate entities could come to grips,
    clenched like a Chinese puzzle . . . yesterday
I stood in a crowded street that was live with people,
and no one spoke a word, and the morning shone.
Everyone silent, moving. . . . Take my hand. Speak to me.
    Muriel Rukeyser (1913–1980)

—My good friend, quoth I—as sure as I am I—and you are you
—And who are you? said he.—Don’t puzzle me; said I.
    Laurence Sterne (1713–1768)
